About this position

University of Birmingham is recruiting a Research Fellow for a project on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of the manufacture and recycling of new energy devices. The role sits in the School of Metallurgy and Materials and is part of the European consortium project SuMaCer on sustainable manufacturing of functional ceramics for Europe’s net-zero energy devices.

The successful candidate will work across environmental science, materials science, chemical engineering, and related sustainability methods. Main tasks include gathering life cycle inventory data from researchers and partners, performing LCA calculations, identifying environmental hotspots, advising on process improvements, tracking economic and circularity indicators, and carrying out prospective assessments for low-TRL technologies. The post also includes technoeconomic assessment (TEA), safety assessment under the EU Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) framework, and engagement with academic and industry partners.

This is a full-time, fixed-term research position up to August 2029. The post has limited funding and the maximum salary is Grade 7, £42,254. Travel within the UK and internationally may be required, including meetings, conferences, and secondments across Europe.

Applicants should have a first degree in a relevant area and normally a higher degree related to battery supply chains, manufacturing/recycling processes, or life cycle assessment, or equivalent qualifications. Experience in quantitative, qualitative, or mixed-methods research is acceptable, but the candidate must be able to work across disciplines. Knowledge of LCA, TEA, materials flow analysis, batteries or related manufacturing, recycling, and environmental impact assessment is desirable.

Closing date: 27 October 2026. Informal enquiries: Jacqueline Edge ([email protected]).
