About this position

Research Fellow opportunity in the School of Chemistry at the University of Birmingham, working on an ARIA-funded project: Hephaisteion: Direct Lithium Extraction using inorganic membranes made by proteins.

The project sits at the intersection of chemistry, materials science, biology, and microscopy. The successful candidate will work with Dr Dominik Kubicki and Birmingham’s Facility for Electron Microscopy, alongside protein scientists, materials chemists, and engineers. The core task is to develop reproducible SEM and image-analysis workflows, with TEM expertise highly desirable, to study protein assembly and the microstructure of fabricated inorganic membranes.

Research activities include quantitative analysis of membrane coverage, morphology, thickness, and defects; troubleshooting imaging artefacts; maintaining traceable sample metadata; and helping guide which materials are redesigned and scaled up. The role also offers opportunities to contribute to publications, seminars, ARIA workshops, and wider community engagement.

Eligibility highlights: a first degree in materials science, physics, chemistry, biological sciences, or a related discipline; a PhD (or near completion) relevant to microscopy or equivalent research experience; strong analytical and communication skills; practical SEM and sample-preparation experience; fluency in image analysis; and the ability to work collaboratively and support research administration.

Funding and contract: full-time, fixed-term for one year with possible extension until July 2029. Salary is £36,636–£46,049, with progression potential to £48,822. The post is part of an ARIA-funded research project.

Deadline: 3 November 2026.
