About this position
Research Fellow in Molecular Quantum Sensing for Biomedical Applications at University College London (UCL), London, United Kingdom.
This is a postdoctoral research fellow opening in the UCL London Centre for Nanotechnology, working with Ben Miller and collaborators, including Professor Vijay Chudasama in UCL Chemistry. The project sits at the intersection of chemistry, physics, materials science, and biomedical applications, with a focus on molecular quantum sensing, nanoparticles, nanocrystals, optical detection, spin properties, and diagnostic test development.
The role involves preparing and characterising nanoparticles, developing coatings and functionalisation methods, improving dispersibility and stability, attaching biological recognition molecules, and testing performance in biological environments and model assays. There is scope to propose new materials, chemistries, and biomedical applications, and the successful candidate will help lead experiments, publish research papers, and contribute to intellectual property.
Eligibility highlights: applicants should hold a PhD in chemistry, physics, materials science, biochemistry, biophysics, or a related discipline. Practical experience with nanoparticles and surface modification is important; synthetic chemistry experience, especially coatings or bioconjugation, is welcome. A strong publication record is expected. Experience with microscopes and optical/biological methods is desirable, while prior quantum sensing experience is not essential.
Funding and terms: the post is funded through the UK Quantum Biomedical Sensing (Q-BIOMED) Research Hub. It is a fixed-term 12-month role, with possible extension subject to further funding. Salary: £43,981-£54,019.
Deadline: 19 October 2026.
How to apply: submit the online application via the UCL Apply Now portal before the closing date. Review the attached job description for full duties and person specification.

What's required
A PhD in chemistry, physics, materials science, biochemistry, biophysics or a related discipline is required. Candidates should have practical experience working with nanoparticles and modifying or functionalising their surfaces; a background in synthetic chemistry, especially surface modification, coatings or bioconjugation, is welcome. A strong publication record with clear evidence of personal contribution is expected. Experience with microscopes and relevant optical and biological methods is desirable, as is experience in bioassay development or optical characterisation of molecular materials or nanoparticles. Previous quantum sensing experience is not essential.
