About this position
Research Fellow opportunity at the University of Birmingham, Department of Metabolism and Systems Science, in Birmingham, United Kingdom.
This is a full-time, fixed-term research position running up to October 2030, focused on pheochromocytomas and paragangliomas (PPGL), especially SDHB-deficient and other SDHx-deficient tumours. The project aims to develop and use novel human PPGL cell models to study cancer metabolism, identify metabolic dysfunction, and uncover potential therapeutic targets within the metabolic network.
The post sits within a recently awarded grant from the Paradifference Foundation and will work in a dynamic research group led by Professor Daniel Tennant. The successful candidate will contribute to deriving new models from clinical material, investigating metabolic pathways, analysing data, publishing findings, presenting at conferences, and helping with grant writing and wider group research.
Eligibility highlights: a PhD (or near completion) in metabolism, cancer, or a closely related area is essential; a first degree in a biological subject with biochemistry-related background is also essential. Strong analytical skills, clear communication, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively are important. The role may involve UK and international travel.
Funding: limited funding is available; the maximum salary offered is Grade 7, £37,694, with the normal range £36,636–£46,049 and progression potential to £48,822.
Deadline: 27 October 2026.
How to apply: submit an application via the University of Birmingham careers portal. Informal enquiries may be directed to Daniel Tennant at [email protected].
