About this position

Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke) is recruiting a postdoctoral Research Scientist in tropical ecology to help design and manage a large ecological field experiment in Indonesian oil palm plantations.

The project is part of a Research Council of Finland Fellowship and focuses on biodiversity-ecosystem function (BEF) relationships in tropical agroecosystems. The experiment will manipulate the diversity of understory vegetation in oil palm plantations in Riau, Sumatra, Indonesia, with the aim of understanding how biodiversity affects ecosystem functioning and plant-focused outcomes such as resistance to invasion.

The appointed researcher will contribute to determining understory species in the experimental treatments, implementing treatments in the field, and measuring treatment effects. The role involves close collaboration with researchers in Finland, the UK, Belgium, and Indonesia, as well as interaction with the palm oil industry.

Luke is based in Helsinki, and when not working in Indonesia the successful candidate will be based at Luke’s Viikki campus. The organization offers a mobile work model within Finland, flexible hours, long vacations, lunch benefits, and support for sports, culture, or commuting.

Applicants should have experience in large-scale ecological field experiments, ideally in the tropics, and should be comfortable managing international teamwork in English. Experience in plant ecology is considered a strong advantage. The post is described as likely suited to someone beyond their first postdoc, though exceptionally qualified recent PhDs are welcome to apply.

The position is a fixed-term specialist post with a salary at complexity level 8 in Luke’s salary system, with a position-specific salary of EUR 3596.42 per month plus a personal performance component. Applications must be submitted before 2026-08-07 via Valtiolle.fi, with postal application also possible if the position ID is clearly stated.
