About this position

CIIMAR – the Interdisciplinary Center of Marine and Environmental Research at the University of Porto – is recruiting one researcher holding a PhD/doctorate for the ECOAT project, Bioinspired strategies for new sustainable marine antifouling technologies. The position is based at CIIMAR in Matosinhos, Porto metropolitan area, Portugal, within the research team Bioinspired Ocean Interfaces under the supervision of Dr. Joana Almeida.

The project focuses on biology and biotechnology, with a strong applied and industrial biotechnology dimension. The selected researcher will contribute to the development, validation, and mode-of-action elucidation of nature-inspired antifouling technologies, combining analytical chemistry and molecular/cellular biology approaches. The role includes carrying out project research, developing new ideas and synergies with the team, training students and team members, and taking supervision responsibilities for MSc and PhD students.

Eligibility is centered on candidates with a PhD or doctorate in Biology, Biotechnology, or a related field. Applicants should have an excellent command of English, an outstanding scientific and professional profile, and demonstrated involvement in national and international research projects. Strong expertise in HPLC-UV, LC-MS, and NMR, as well as molecular and cellular biology tools for mode-of-action prediction, is particularly important. Experience with natural-based polymers, bioactives, antifouling prototypes, and molecular target identification will be highly valued.

The appointment is a full-time contract (40 hours/week) under an uncertain-term work contract and exclusivity regime. The gross monthly salary is EUR 2,408.11. Funding comes from the ECOAT project, supported by COMPETE 2030 / Portugal 2030 (Other EU programme).

The application deadline is 11 August 2026 at 23:59 (Europe/Lisbon). Candidates must apply by email to rh@ciimar.up.pt, using the competition reference in the subject line and submitting a CV in English, a motivation letter, and eligibility certificates.
