About this position

RIKEN’s Center for Environmental Resource Science is recruiting a Researcher / Postdoctoral Fellow for the Environmental Metabolism Analysis Research Team in Yokohama, Kanagawa, Japan.

The position focuses on environmental science, biological systems, data science, and machine learning, with research themes including environmental dynamics analysis, nature-symbiotic systems, circular economy systems, polymer materials, and aquatic life sciences. The lab studies how chemical resources are produced, consumed, and decomposed in natural environments, combining NMR, inorganic element analysis, microbial community analysis, IoT/big data, AI, and mathematical modeling to understand metabolic homeostasis and breakdown.

The successful candidate will work with the team director and other collaborators to plan and execute R&D contributing to the TRIP initiative, develop large-scale data analysis and visualization technologies, supervise staff involved in research activities, and conduct collaborative research within RIKEN and with external organizations.

Eligibility: a doctoral degree is required. Research Fellow applicants should have held a PhD for more than 5 years or have equivalent experience; Special Research Fellow applicants should have held a PhD for less than 5 years or be able to obtain the degree by the start date. Strong collaboration and communication skills are emphasized.

Funding and conditions: contract-based employment with annual salary starting from about 4 million yen, plus discretionary work allowance, commuting allowance, housing allowance, and social insurance. The post is on-site in Yokohama and is not generally suitable for remote work.

Deadline: applications are accepted from 2026-08-21 until 2027-08-21, but the search may close earlier once a suitable candidate is found.
