About this position

RIKEN’s Research Center for Computational Science (R-CCS) in Japan is recruiting a Researcher/Postdoctoral Fellow for the Complex Climate Science Research Team. The position focuses on weather and climate modeling, computational science, high-performance computing (HPC), GPU computing, and generative AI for scientific software development.

The project aims to build a new specification-driven research and development platform for scientific and technical computing. The work includes designing specification description methods, analyzing and specifying existing scientific code, developing code-generation workflows with generative AI, building automated verification mechanisms, supporting diverse computing environments such as CPUs and GPUs, and introducing new mathematical models, numerical algorithms, and physical processes.

The main validation target is the SCALE weather and climate model, with the broader goal of improving large-scale scientific computing workflows and advancing research methodology across weather/climate science, numerical computation, HPC, AI, and software engineering.

Eligibility: Applicants must have a PhD in a relevant field. The researcher role requires a completed doctorate; the special researcher role accepts candidates who will have the PhD by the start date and are within 5 years of the doctorate. Strong collaboration and communication skills are required. Prior experience across all listed areas is not necessary.

Funding: Fixed-term contract position with annual salary starting from about 4 million yen, plus discretionary work allowance, commuting allowance, housing allowance, and social insurance.
