About this position

The University of Birmingham's School of Computer Science invites applications for a PhD position focused on the development of self-evolving AI (LLM) software systems. This pioneering project addresses the fundamental challenges of engineering reliable and high-quality AI-driven software systems, particularly those built upon Large Language Models (LLMs). As AI increasingly shapes the landscape of software engineering, this research aims to design neural-symbolic AI solutions that can automatically generate, test, and improve AI algorithms and code, ultimately leading to the creation of new types of AI systems.

PhD candidates will engage in a wide range of tasks, including automatic code generation, automated testing, and performance enhancement of AI systems. The project deliverables may include novel methodologies, algorithms, or prototype tools, depending on the research direction. You will join a collaborative group of eight PhD students and have opportunities to work with industrial partners, benefiting from generous support and a friendly academic environment.

Applicants should possess a strong background in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, or Software Engineering. A first undergraduate or postgraduate degree with Distinction (or international equivalent) is required, and candidates with peer-reviewed publications are especially encouraged to apply. The IDEAS lab, led by Dr. TC Chen, provides further information about the research group and ongoing projects (IDEAS lab).

To apply, prospective students should contact Dr. Chen ([email protected]) with their CV, a research proposal, and a statement explaining their motivation to join the group. Applications are accepted year round, and self-funded candidates are welcome. The official application portal is available at University of Birmingham PhD application.

This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research at the intersection of AI theory and software engineering, with the potential to shape the future of AI software systems and their impact on society.
