About this position
Stanford University’s Graduate School of Education is hiring a Social Science Research Scholar to work with the Black Academic Development Lab under the direction of Anne H. Charity Hudley, Principal Investigator. The role centers on Afrocentric education, Black liberation pedagogy, Elementary English Language Arts, and curriculum design, with a major focus on developing a culturally grounded, standards-aligned 5th-grade ELA supplemental curriculum.
The position is deeply community-engaged and involves working in partnership with an independent Afrocentric PreK–8 school in Oakland, California. The researcher will spend at least two days per week on site in Oakland collaborating with teachers, administrators, and school leadership, and at least two days per week at Stanford on related projects focused on Black Language and Culture practice and pedagogy. The curriculum is intended to be both locally impactful and a replicable model for Afrocentric and Black-centered elementary schools nationwide.
Minimum requirement: a Ph.D. or Ed.D. in education or a related field by the time of appointment. Related areas include African American Studies/Africana Studies, African and African Diaspora Studies, Elementary English/English Language Arts Education, Curriculum and Instruction, and Elementary Literacy Education.
Desired background includes expertise in Afrocentric education, Black liberation pedagogy, African diaspora studies, elementary literacy curriculum development, Black literature, K–12 teaching experience, culturally sustaining pedagogy, anti-racist curriculum frameworks, and strong writing/communication skills. Candidates must be eligible to work in the US and able to travel regularly to Oakland and the Stanford campus.
