About this position

This PhD project at Loughborough University investigates the evolution of soil micro-structure during deterioration driven by environmental cycles, with a focus on earthworks slopes that support transport infrastructure and flood defences. As weather extremes intensify due to global change, the resilience of critical infrastructure is increasingly threatened. The project is part of the Vice Chancellor’s PhD Cluster – RAINDROP (Resilient eArthwork INfrastructure: Diagnosis, RehabilitatiOn & Prognosis), offering a collaborative environment with a cohort of doctoral researchers working on interconnected, interdisciplinary projects for sustainable and climate-resilient infrastructure.

The research aims to advance understanding of how environmental cycles, such as weather fluctuations, drive deterioration in geomaterials. Special emphasis is placed on soil micro-structure evolution and its connection to macro-scale behavior. The project utilizes advanced laboratory testing, imaging techniques, and computer simulations to analyze these processes. Outcomes are expected to inform strategies for mitigating deterioration and enhancing the resilience of geotechnical infrastructure.

Supervision is provided by Dr Mark A. E. Jepson (primary supervisor), Dr Alister Smith, and Dr Matthew Frost, all with expertise in materials and geotechnical engineering. The Department of Materials hosts the project, and applicants are encouraged to contact Dr Jepson for further information.

Funding is available for a 3-year full-time studentship, including a tax-free stipend of £20,780 per annum and full university tuition fees. No bench fees are required. Both UK and international candidates are eligible to apply, with the earliest start date for international applicants being January 2026. Entry requirements include a first-class or high 2:1 degree in a relevant Engineering or Physical Science discipline (e.g., Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Engineering Geology, Earth Science, Materials Science). A relevant master’s degree or employment experience is advantageous. Applicants must meet Loughborough University's minimum English language requirements.
