Are you passionate about transforming the future of space manufacturing? Join the newly launched Strathclyde Centre for Doctoral Training in Space Manufacturing (CDT-SM) — a bold initiative driving cutting-edge research in advanced manufacturing for space applications, sustainability, and in-situ resource utilisation (ISRU).
We are now inviting applications from UK nationals and candidates with settled status in the UK for fully funded PhD positions.
?? Key Research Areas:
- Advanced Manufacturing: Develop next-generation materials and components for extreme space environments and dual-use terrestrial applications. Projects include lightweight and temperature-resistant composites, as well as materials enhanced by microgravity conditions—such as those used in 3D/4D printing, metal alloys, semiconductors, tissue engineering, and various forms of self-assembling materials. Particular attention is also given to the fluid-dynamic conditions under which such materials are produced..
- ISRU: Design systems and processes to harness materials found on the Moon, Mars, and other celestial bodies to support future space missions and reduce Earth-dependence.
- Sustainable Space Manufacturing: Investigate environmentally responsible methods and materials to improve the sustainability of space systems and supply chains.
- Performance and Maintenance: Extend operational life and reliability of space assets through autonomous repair systems, recycling technologies, and real-time system optimisation.
?? Cross-cutting themes include simulation, systems engineering, automation, sensors, miniaturisation, and the logistics of upscaling processes in constrained space environments.
