About this position
Chiba University’s Center for Environmental Remote Sensing (CEReS) is recruiting a Specially Appointed Researcher for a project on AI-based intraseasonal and seasonal prediction models. The role focuses on research and development of forecasting systems for roughly 10–90 day timescales, with applications such as ship operations and broader social use.
The project combines AI weather and climate models, ensemble forecasting, data assimilation, generative AI, and super-resolution. Specific themes include development and comparison of models such as ClimaX-LETKF and Anemoi, long-term stable integration up to three months, forecast correction using conditional diffusion or statistical methods, and super-resolution for low-resolution outputs. Collaboration is expected with the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) project and with the Mathematical Flood Science Research Group at the Graduate School of Engineering, The University of Tokyo.
This is a fixed-term postdoctoral-equivalent research position at Chiba University in Japan. The annual salary is approximately 5–6 million yen, with around 5.5 million yen expected for those in the first year after the doctorate. Standard benefits include commuting allowance and social insurance coverage.
Applicants should hold a doctoral degree or be expected to obtain one soon. Strong interest or experience in machine learning, deep learning, generative AI, meteorology, climate science, atmospheric science, oceanography, numerical weather prediction, data assimilation, remote sensing, applied mathematics, information science, or data science is relevant. Meteorology/climate experience is welcome but not mandatory, and candidates with AI or large-scale numerical computation experience are encouraged to apply.
The application deadline is 2026-10-31. Required materials include a CV in the university format, publication list, up to three major papers, a research history and future plan, and contact details for 1–2 referees. Applications must be sent by registered mail to the CEReS office; online and email applications are not accepted.
