About this position
Los Alamos National Laboratory is recruiting a Synthetic Organic Chemistry Postdoc in the High Explosives Science and Technology group (Q-5). The project focuses on synthesizing novel N-containing aliphatic and aromatic heterocycles for energetic materials, including explosives and propellants.
The role is hands-on and research-intensive: the selected postdoc will design, execute, document, and analyze organic reactions; perform separation, purification, and isolation of target compounds; and characterize products using infrared spectroscopy, 1H NMR, 13C{1H} NMR, with HPLC and mass spectrometry experience considered beneficial. Collaboration with experimental and computational scientists is expected, and the work may contribute to publications and national-security-related projects.
Eligibility highlights: applicants must have a Ph.D. in organic chemistry or a related field, have completed all Ph.D. requirements by the appointment start, and be within five years of Ph.D. completion. The post requires a willingness to learn safe handling of energetic materials in a rigorous safety environment, strong oral and written communication skills, and Q-clearance eligibility, including U.S. citizenship.
Desired experience includes novel organic synthesis, developing new synthetic pathways, and safe handling of reactive materials. The appointment is full time, with a two-year term and possible third-year extension; the start date is between August 2026 and January 2027. Benefits mentioned include medical, dental, vision, life/disability insurance, parental leave, 401(k) matching, tuition assistance, PTO, holidays, and relocation support.
How to apply: submit a single PDF with a cover letter addressing all minimum and desired qualifications, a current CV with publications, and optionally a summary of relevant research projects. Apply through the LANL jobs portal using a LANL account.
