About this position
The University of Jyväskylä’s Department of Chemistry, part of the Faculty of Mathematics and Science, is seeking to recruit three doctoral researchers for positions starting November 1, 2026, or as agreed. These positions are open to both new applicants interested in pursuing a PhD and current doctoral students requiring financial support to complete their degree. The department is internationally recognized for its excellence in science and chemical education, with research strengths in chemical nanoscience, functional molecules and materials, hydrogen research, and the chemistry of the circular economy. As a member of the Nanoscience Center, the department fosters interdisciplinary research and offers world-class laboratory and computational resources.
Successful candidates will join any active research group within the department, with research areas spanning nanotechnology, materials chemistry, catalysis, electrochemistry, environmental chemistry, molecular chemistry, polymer chemistry, medicinal chemistry, organic chemistry, biochemistry, analytical chemistry, atmospheric chemistry, chemical biology, computational chemistry, synthetic chemistry, and more. Applicants must contact potential supervisors in advance to agree on a research topic before applying. Without prior agreement, applications will not be considered. The application should clearly state the research group, supervisor, and a brief description of the research topic.
Doctoral researchers will focus on completing a doctoral thesis, doctoral studies, assisting with teaching tasks, and related duties. The University of Jyväskylä stipulates qualification requirements and language skills guidelines for doctoral researchers. A suitable Master’s degree and good command of English are required. Selected candidates must apply for postgraduate study rights through a separate procedure after selection. For current doctoral students applying to complete their PhD, eligibility requires active supervision in the Department of Chemistry, registration as present, a supervision document, ongoing thesis work not yet in review, and at least part-time study.
The selection process involves initial review and interviews by potential supervisors, followed by evaluation by the department’s deputy head for research and a selection committee. Criteria include previous academic performance, timely completion of studies, application documents, motivation, suitability, and alignment with departmental research priorities. The University of Jyväskylä offers a vibrant, international, and multidisciplinary community, prioritizing individual wellbeing and work–life balance. Finland provides a high standard of living, free education, affordable childcare, generous family benefits, and comprehensive healthcare. Employees enjoy four to six weeks of annual holiday, and Jyväskylä offers easy access to nature and a lively cultural scene.
Salaries are based on the Finnish University Salary System, with a starting salary of approximately 2500 €/month (gross) and a holiday bonus. Salary progression is tied to thesis advancement, and a six-month trial period applies. Application documents must be submitted in English and PDF format, including a CV, motivation/cover letter (Option A) or PhD project status (Option B), degree certificate, transcript of records, and diploma supplement. The deadline for applications is May 10, 2026. For further information, contact Professor Heikki Tuononen ([email protected]). The university is committed to fairness, transparency, and diversity in selection decisions, and encourages qualified applicants from all backgrounds to apply.
