About this position

Three fully funded PhD positions are open at Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore (Scuola di Dottorato Agrisystem, Piacenza, Italy) within the Department of Sustainable Crop Production.

The projects sit at the interface of agriculture, agrivoltaics, digital agriculture, carbon farming, remote sensing, process-based modelling, machine learning, and UAV/proximal sensing. The experimental setting includes on-farm trials across the Po Valley, an experimental agrivoltaic facility with dual-axis trackers and bifacial modules, and collaborations with partner groups in France, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Spain.

Available topics include: (1) smart agrivoltaic systems and integrated agro-energetic modelling/control; (2) digital agriculture and artificial intelligence for monitoring and optimisation; and (3) carbon farming and agro-ecosystem sustainability for climate-smart strategies in a regenerative agriculture program.

Funding is described as fully funded through the PNRR project Filiera Sostenibile Gruppo Casalasco, with a dedicated annual budget for research and mobility and increased support for periods abroad.

Eligibility highlights: an MSc in agricultural or environmental sciences, geoinformatics, environmental or energy engineering, physics, or data science; Python or R is a strong asset; curiosity about field data is essential. Candidates graduating by 31 October 2026 may also apply.

Application timing matters: the post says to email [email protected] by 24 August with a short paragraph on your intended topic, and the team will help develop the proposal. The application includes a 2000-word research project that must be countersigned. The call/application portal is linked in the post.
