About this position

ETH Zürich is advertising three fully funded PhD positions in History and Theory of Urban Design and Architecture within the ERC Advanced Grant project Co-opolis: Another Architectural History of the European City (1890–1990).

The project, based at the Chair of the History and Theory of Urban Design and the Institute for the History and Theory of Architecture (gta), investigates how third-sector actors such as cooperatives, mutual aid societies, associations, and other collective institutions co-produced European cities through housing and civic structures. The comparative research focuses on France, Sweden, and Switzerland, examining the relationship between welfare regimes, collective actors, and the built environment from 1890 to 1990.

Each doctoral researcher will focus on one of the three countries and develop an original research direction within the project’s broader framework. The work includes dissertation research, participation in workshops and seminars, conference presentations, contributions to the project website, and engagement with the gta PhD programme and chair activities, including occasional teaching-related tasks.

Eligibility highlights: an MSc degree in Architecture, History of Art, Social History, or a closely related humanities field completed by the start date; strong interest in archival and historical research; English proficiency; and language skills relevant to the selected case-study country (French for France; German plus French and/or Italian for Switzerland; Swedish for Sweden). Previous publishing experience is welcome.

Funding: the positions are fully funded for four years under ETH Zürich doctoral salary conditions.

Application: submit a motivation letter, CV, a short description of a possible research direction (max. 1 page), and two reference contacts via the ETH Zürich online application portal only. Applications close on 2026-11-22.
