About this position

Two PhD positions are open at the University of Zurich in the Institute of Asian and Oriental Studies (IAOS), Chair of Modern Chinese Studies, for the SNSF-funded project “Governing the Party: How the Chinese Communist Party Holds Itself Together”.

The project examines the Chinese Communist Party as an organisation, focusing on how it governs itself through institutions, routines, ideology, supervision, recruitment, training, evaluation, promotion, and organisational expansion. The team welcomes original and feasible dissertation proposals on contemporary or historical topics related to the CCP since 1949, using archival, documentary, ethnographic, interview, or computational methods.

Successful candidates will develop an independent doctoral dissertation under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Jean Christopher Mittelstaedt, contribute to shared datasets built from Chinese-language sources, publish dissertation findings, and take part in team research activities and conferences. The position also includes enrolment in the doctoral programme of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at the University of Zurich.

Applicants should have an excellent MA degree or equivalent in political science, sociology, Chinese studies, history, or a related discipline; strong modern Chinese reading ability; interest in political institutions, organisation studies, and ideology; and training in at least one relevant method area. Excellent English is required; German is helpful but not mandatory.

The appointment starts on 1 March 2027, is temporary for 48 months, and is paid according to SNSF guidelines. The project also offers funding for fieldwork, archival research, conference travel, workshops, and the possibility of applying for an SNSF mobility grant for a 6–12 month research stay abroad.

Application deadline: 22 November 2026. Apply via the UZH job portal with a single PDF containing a cover letter, CV, diplomas and transcripts, a research proposal, two writing samples, and two referees’ contact details.
