About this position
Two postdoctoral researcher positions are open in the ERC Starting Grant project COHAB – Environmental Landscape Ethics: A Theory of Cohabitability at the University of Jyväskylä, Finland. The project explores environmental ethics, cohabitability, multispecies coexistence, land use, politics, social life, and landscape/urban planning in human-managed environments.
One position is in Environmental Social Sciences and focuses on empirical work, including comparative case studies on cohabitability in urban and/or rural contexts and the factors that drive or impede cohabitability. The other position is in Philosophy / Political Theory and focuses on theoretical work on the normative and institutional implications of cohabitability, including justice, regulation, responsibilities, and related ethical and ontological assumptions.
Both positions are fixed-term for 2 years, start on 3 August 2026 or as agreed (latest 4 January 2027), and are part of the Department of Social Sciences and Philosophy and the JYU.Wisdom sustainability research community. The salary is approximately EUR 3,300–4,100 gross per month depending on qualifications and experience.
Eligibility highlights include a PhD in social sciences, human geography, philosophy, or another relevant field; strong empirical or theoretical research skills depending on the position; interdisciplinary research capacity; and a good command of English. Applicants are expected to be motivated early-career scholars interested in multispecies coexistence and sustainability-related questions.
Applications must be submitted via the University of Jyväskylä online system by 14 May 2026, 23:59 (Europe/Helsinki). Required documents include a CV, informal motivation letter, numbered publication list, and PhD certificate. Applications by email are not accepted, and the research plan is not mandatory.
