The University of Jyväskylä’s Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences invites applications for a two-year Postdoctoral Researcher position in Environmental Social Sciences, starting 3 August 2026 or as agreed (latest 4 January 2027). The position is part of the Department of Social Sciences and Philosophy and is linked to the profiling area of planetary well-being and sustainability transitions. It is funded by the ERC StG project ‘Environmental Landscape Ethics: A Theory of Cohabitability’, which aims to transform the ethics of land use and urban and landscape planning, and develop new philosophical and social scientific frameworks for ethically responsible cohabitation and multispecies sustainability in human-managed environments.
The successful candidate will conduct innovative interdisciplinary research, both independently and collaboratively, focusing on empirical work in WP4. This involves comparative case studies on cohabitability in various urban and rural contexts, examining factors that drive or impede cohabitability. The role also includes contributing as a Wisdom Fellow to the JYU.Wisdom sustainability research community, actively participating in campus-based activities and community building.
Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in social sciences, human geography, or a related field. Strong empirical research skills in environmental social sciences and interdisciplinary research experience are essential. Candidates should demonstrate capacities for both independent and collaborative research, and a good command of English is required. The position’s qualification requirements and language skills are stipulated by University regulations and must be met by the application deadline.
Benefits include working in an international, multidisciplinary, and award-winning research team, with support for developing sustainability research skills, creating new projects, and successful funding applications. The University offers a beautiful campus environment, excellent sports benefits, and is located in Jyväskylä, a city known for its vibrant student population, modest living costs, and exceptional nature amenities. The position is rated on levels 5-6 in the YPJ salary system for Finnish universities, with a monthly salary of approximately 3,300–4,100 € (gross, excluding holiday bonus), depending on qualifications and prior experience. A six-month trial period applies. The University promotes HR Excellence in Research and is committed to fairness, transparency, and diversity in selection decisions.
To apply, candidates must submit an up-to-date ORCID profile (public visibility), CV (in English), motivation letter, list of publications (highlighting five most relevant), Ph.D. certificate, and an empty research plan file (not mandatory).
