University Assistant with Ph.D. (m/f/d) in Global Contemporary History at the University of Graz, Department of History, Austria.

This is a postdoctoral opening for a researcher with a completed doctorate and strong interests in global contemporary history. The position is embedded in the Section of Contemporary History and offers the opportunity to contribute to ongoing research projects, develop new projects, teach courses, advise and examine students, organize academic events, contribute to the section website, and support departmental administration and evaluation activities. The position also explicitly offers the chance to work toward a habilitation thesis or equivalent scholarly achievement (“second book”).

Research focus: global contemporary history, with related fields including modern history, cultural history, international history and politics, and politics and history. The role emphasizes independent research and publication activity, interdisciplinary collaboration, and engagement with historical knowledge dissemination and public outreach.

Eligibility highlights: applicants should hold a completed doctoral/PhD degree and bring international research experience in Africa, Asia, or Latin America, a strong publication and conference record, excellent language skills in German, English, and at least one additional foreign language, several years of university teaching experience (including online teaching), very good IT skills, and a clear willingness to work collaboratively, interdisciplinarily, and with students.

Employment and funding: full-time salary is at least € 70,200.20 gross per year (salary category B1 with PhD), with possible overpayment depending on qualification and experience. The appointment is temporary for 2 years and begins on 2027-02-01.
