About this position

The International Max Planck Research School – Biological Intelligence (IMPRS-BI) offers fully funded doctoral (PhD) positions for outstanding graduates from around the world. Located in Martinsried, Munich, and Seewiesen, Germany, IMPRS-BI is a collaborative network that brings together the Max Planck Institute for Biological Intelligence and two leading partner universities: Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU) and Technische Universität München (TUM). The program focuses on unraveling the nature of biological intelligence by bridging disciplines such as neuroscience, behavioral ecology, evolution, connectomics, and evolutionary genetics. Doctoral students will investigate how nervous systems develop and evolve, enabling animals to pursue goals, navigate environments, and adapt behavioral strategies to their ecological niches.

IMPRS-BI provides a structured, English-speaking PhD program with access to state-of-the-art facilities, individual supervision, and mentoring. Students receive comprehensive training in scientific, computational, and transferable skills, and are supported to participate in international conferences and workshops. The program is fully funded, with no tuition fees and a stipend for all doctoral students.

Applicants should have a strong commitment to basic research and hold a MSc in biology, chemistry, physics, psychology, cognitive neuroscience, computer science, mathematics, or related fields. Candidates with a BSc may be considered for a fast-track program in cooperation with GSN-LMU. Degrees do not need to be awarded at the time of application but must be completed before the program starts. IMPRS-BI is inclusive and welcomes applicants from diverse backgrounds.
