Looking for three full-time highly motivated and dynamic doctoral researchers!
Location: KU Leuven (Belgium)
Deadline application: 10/09/2025 (23:59 CET)
The Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences and the Leuven Centre for Global Governance Studies are looking for three full-time highly motivated and dynamic doctoral researchers with backgrounds in Bioscience Engineering, Agricultural Economics, Environmental Economics, Ecological Economics, Political Science or Governance for a new exiting four year project on the ‘Design, Implementation, and Impact of Voluntary Sustainability Standards in Global Food and Fiber Systems (VSS4Food&Fiber)’ financed by the Research Foundation of Flanders.
VSS4Food&Fiber is a collaborative and interdisciplinary research project led by Miet Maertens and me with the overall objective to enhance our understanding of voluntary sustainability standards (VSS) and their effectiveness as market- and trade-based sustainability tools in global agrifood and fiber systems. The project focuses on eight tropical commodities (coffee, cocoa, tea, palm oil, soybean, banana, sugarcane, and cotton), and on the most important VSS in these sectors.
We will engage with diverse stakeholders, including VSS organizations, food and textile companies, civil society organizations and international institutes, about our research and findings. The project and team will be supported by Eva Boonaert and Kaat Van Hoyweghen
Are you eager to contribute to this? Are you concerned about sustainability and justice in our global food and fiber system, and eager to help push them in a better direction? Are you interested in market-based sustainability governance or in food standards as a global governance mechanism? Do you want to work in an interdisciplinary dedicated team? Has doing a PhD ever crossed your mind? Are you interested in working at one of the oldest universities in Europe?
If so, consider our call for one of the three vacant PhD positions. More details on each of the vacancies and how to apply (deadline 10/09/2025) on the below links:
