Fully Funded PhD in Hydroelasticity of Floating Platforms for Tidal Turbines
PhD opportunity at the
University of Strathclyde
(Department of Naval Architecture, Ocean & Marine Engineering, NAOME) on
hydroelasticity of floating platforms for tidal turbines
.
This fully funded 3-year studentship focuses on the interaction between platform flexibility, waves, currents, turbine loading, and floating tidal turbine performance. The project combines
marine hydrodynamics
,
structural dynamics
,
fluid-structure interaction
, and
numerical modelling
for offshore renewable energy systems.
Research themes:
hydroelastic behaviour of large floating platforms; platform motions, deformation, and structural loads; wave-current interactions and site conditions; coupled platform-turbine interactions; engineering and computational approaches for floating tidal energy.
Eligibility:
applicants should normally hold, or expect to obtain, a First-Class or 2:1 Honours degree (or equivalent) in Naval Architecture, Ocean/Offshore Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil/Structural Engineering, Marine Engineering, Physics, or a related discipline. Experience or strong interest in marine hydrodynamics, floating structures, hydroelasticity, offshore renewable energy, or computational modelling is especially welcome.
Funding:
fully funded for Home (UK) students for 3 years, including Home tuition fees and a tax-free stipend of about £21,805 in Year 1, rising to about £22,985 in Year 3. International candidates may be considered if they can cover the International–Home tuition fee difference.
Deadline:
31 October 2026. Interviews are scheduled for 2–6 November 2026, with an expected start date of 30 November 2026.
