Multiple Doctoral Researcher Positions in Computational Design, Human-Machine Collaboration, and Architectural Building System Design at University of Stuttgart

The Institute for Computational Design and Construction (ICD) at the University of Stuttgart is recruiting multiple doctoral researcher positions (Research Associate, TV-L E13) across three related research areas: computational design , human-machine collaboration , and architectural building system design . These positions are embedded in interdisciplinary research projects linked to the Cluster of Excellence IntCDC and Horizon Europe EIC Pathfinder Challenge projects. The research themes include digitally integrated and robot-enabled construction systems, modular building systems, autonomous multi-robot assembly, human-robot collaboration, digital twins, and timber-based building systems for robotic construction and retrofitting. Research areas and topics: - Computational design: integrated digital workflows, simulation and optimization, design-to-fabrication pipelines, modular building systems, and physical demonstrators. - Human-machine collaboration: wearable and visual interfaces, coordination strategies, real-time collaboration, digital twin frameworks, and user studies for human-robot collaboration. - Architectural building system design: timber construction, modular timber systems, robotic retrofitting strategies, façade and envelope applications, and assembly logics for autonomous construction. Eligibility highlights: Applicants should hold a master’s degree in architecture, engineering, computer science, HCI, robotics, interaction design, or a closely related field depending on the project. Strong programming skills (Python/C#) are important; AI, ROS, real-time data processing, digital fabrication, and construction practice are beneficial. Excellent English is required, and German is helpful for one of the positions. Funding and employment: The roles are salaried research associate positions under TV-L E13 . The post emphasizes access to excellent research infrastructure, teaching opportunities in the ITECH M.Sc. program, and collaboration with European academic and industry partners. Application process: Submit a single PDF containing a CV, statement of interest, portfolio, research/publication samples, and a skills list with proficiency levels. Send the application by email to [email protected] using the relevant subject line for the chosen research area. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, and the initial deadline is 2026-07-20 .

Merging architectural design and robotic planning using interactive agent-based modelling for collective robotic construction

Most research on collective robotic construction (CRC) separates the architectural design and robotic path planning phases of the overall construction process. Specifically, a structure is designed and afterwards sent to a planner or compiler that returns instructions for the assembly of the structure with the robots at hand. Although this has led to the assembly of spatially complex structures, it obscures the planning process, making it inaccessible to the architect. Considering that one potential of CRC is that the architect can perform as more than a designer of static structures, this paper showcases how agent-based modelling can collapse the architectural design and robotic planning phases for CRC. As such the overall construction workflow is upended, leading to more designer control, adjustment for tolerances in the construction process, a more general understanding of the processes, and the potential for architectural reconfiguration when working with CRC systems. This is demonstrated through the presentation of an agent-based model for assembling a planar structure using a previously developed CRC system.
