PhD in Forest Restoration and Ecosystem Services at Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences

PhD opportunity in Forest Restoration and Ecosystem Services at the Southern Swedish Forest Research Centre , Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), Alnarp. This 4-year full-time doctoral project examines how to restore mixed broadleaved forests and improve the delivery of ecosystem services in a changing climate. The research is centered on forest restoration , forest management , ecosystem services , biodiversity , and climate resilience , with a focus on comparing passive and active restoration pathways for broadleaved-dominated forests. The project will use existing experiments, chronosequences, survey data, and field-based forest research to evaluate how restoration affects ecosystem services and forest resilience. It is a strong fit for candidates interested in forest ecology, applied forest science, and multidisciplinary environmental research. Eligibility highlights: applicants should hold an MSc in forest science, biology, ecology, or a related field; meet the general PhD entry requirements; and satisfy English language requirements equivalent to Swedish upper-secondary English B/6. A driver’s licence is required for fieldwork. Experience with large datasets, forestry, ecology, transdisciplinary studies, or ecosystem service assessments is considered an advantage. Funding: the position is an employment as a doctoral student for 4 years, with salary according to the local collective agreement and fixed salary progression. Deadline: 14 September 2026. Start date is 1 December 2026 or by agreement. How to apply: submit your application via the vacancy page and include the required attachments described in SLU’s doctoral education application instructions. Selection is based on the application documents and the applicant’s ability to complete the programme within the allotted time.
