ISCTE - Instituto Universitário de Lisboa

Post-doc for LUMIRing: Machine Learning for Crosstalk Mitigation and Passive Optical Network Architectures

The LUMIRing project at ISCTE - Instituto Universitário de Lisboa offers a unique postdoctoral opportunity to advance multicore fiber (MCF) technology in a real-world metro environment. The project deploys a live MCF testbed within Lisbon Metro’s Yellow Line, enabling researchers to explore weakly coupled MCF transmission under challenging mechanical stresses. This initiative is at the forefront of optical communications, aiming to design, implement, and validate machine learning techniques for crosstalk mitigation and develop new passive optical network architectures. The infrastructure includes a 12-tube cable, each with 12 fibers, comprising 74 weakly-coupled MCFs of various types and 70 conventional single-mode fibers. The project is coordinated by ISCTE-IUL and involves collaborations with national and international partners such as Metropolitano de Lisboa, Heraeus Covantics, Tratos, Telcabo, Chiral Photonics, and Instituto de Telecomunicações. Together, the consortium fosters a dynamic, open-access platform for rigorous testing, monitoring, and demonstration of diverse MCF configurations, supporting comparative performance analysis and technological innovation in telecom solutions. The postdoctoral position focuses on leveraging machine learning to address real-life transmission challenges, integrating data transmission with sensing, and pushing the limits of current MCF capabilities. Candidates will contribute to advancing optical network architectures and supporting digital transformation and AI integration in telecommunications. The position offers a 36-month employment contract with an annual gross salary of 55,000 euro and full public sector benefits. ISCTE-IUL is certified with the HR Excellence in Research European Award, ensuring a supportive and ethical research environment. Applicants must hold a PhD in Telecommunications Engineering, Optics, Electrical Engineering, Communication Engineering, or Computer Science, with preference for those experienced in optical communications and multicore fiber technology. Proficiency in English is required. To apply, candidates should submit their CV, motivation letter, official transcripts, and contact details of their PhD advisor or employer by email to [email protected]. The selection process includes an eligibility check, assessment of scientific merit, and an online interview for shortlisted candidates. The application deadline is March 29, 2026, and the position starts May 1, 2026. For further details, visit https://lumiring.iscte-iul.pt/ .

ISCTE - University Institute of Lisbon

Postdoctoral Researcher in Multicore Fiber Sensing and Communications Research Using the LUMIRing Testbed

The LUMIRing project at ISCTE - University Institute of Lisbon is recruiting a Postdoctoral Researcher to work on multicore fiber sensing and communications in the Multicore Fiber Integration of Sensing and Communication (MFISAC) project. This opportunity is centered on a live optical fiber testbed, the Lisbon Underground Multicore Fiber Ring (LUMIRing) , deployed in Lisbon Metro’s Yellow Line. The platform is designed to investigate weakly coupled multicore fiber transmission under realistic underground conditions, including the mechanical stresses and deployment challenges found in metro infrastructure. The role offers the chance to contribute to advanced research at the intersection of optical communications , fiber sensing , and multicore fiber technology . The project includes a substantial test-bed infrastructure: a 12-tube cable with 12 fibers per tube, 74 standard-cladding weakly coupled multicore fibers of several types, and 70 conventional single-mode single-core fibers. The research environment is highly collaborative, bringing together partners from Portugal, Germany, Italy, and the USA, including metro operators, fiber and cable manufacturers, telecom providers, optical component suppliers, and a telecommunications research institute. The successful candidate is expected to help design, implement, and validate techniques that reduce performance degradation and support the integration of data transmission with sensing. The position is especially relevant for researchers interested in optical systems, transmission performance, network behavior under real-world conditions, and practical innovation in next-generation telecom infrastructure. Eligibility highlights: a PhD or equivalent in Telecommunications Engineering or Optics is required. Prior experience in optical communications, especially multicore fiber technology, is preferred. Strong English proficiency is required, and all application materials must be submitted in English. Funding and appointment: the post is a 19-month full-time employment contract with Iscte-IUL, with an annual gross salary of 65,000 euro and standard public-sector benefits. How to apply: email your application to [email protected] . Include a CV, a personal motivation letter (up to one page), official graduate and postgraduate transcripts, and contact details for your PhD advisor or employer. The deadline is 31 October 2026 . More information is available on the project website: https://lumiring.iscte-iul.pt/ .
