Catchment-Scale Groundwater Flow and Transport Modelling

The University of Kassel and University of Giessen are jointly recruiting for 11 PhD positions and 1 postdoc in a new collaborative project focused on environmental engineering and geoscience disciplines. The project, ADAPT, addresses drought adaptation, water reuse, micropollutants, and groundwater recharge, integrating hydrogeology, soil science, microbiology, and agricultural sciences. Research topics include groundwater flow and transport modelling, reactive transport experiments, applied microbiology, environmental analysis, and water reuse. The project leverages field sampling, advanced laboratory experiments, and process-based modelling, offering opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration and networking. PhD students will participate in field campaigns and annual workshops, and work closely with supervisors from both universities. Applicants should hold an MSc in a relevant field and have strong backgrounds in environmental physics, biogeochemistry, microbiology, molecular biology, analytical chemistry, or numerical modelling. Funding is provided through fixed-term contracts (3.5 years, 75% EG 13 TV-H). The application deadline is October 19, 2025. To apply, candidates should submit a single PDF with motivation letter, CV, transcripts, and references via the university recruitment websites. For more information, contact the listed supervisors.
