PhD in Atomic Layer Deposition for Novel Battery Materials

PhD opportunity at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) in the Plasma & Materials Processing group for research on atomic layer deposition for novel battery materials . The project focuses on designing and engineering key interfaces for lithium-ion and sodium-ion batteries , with an emphasis on sustainable energy materials, thin-film technologies, and electrochemical performance for next-generation energy storage. The successful candidate will join TU/e’s research environment in Atomic Scale Processing , working on interface engineering at the atomic scale through atomic layer deposition (ALD) and related thin-film techniques. The research is embedded in the university’s wider Brainport ecosystem and connected to national consortia and external partners, including BatteryNL and NanexBat . The project is highly collaborative and involves academic and industrial interaction in areas relevant to green hydrogen, photovoltaics, and especially safer, high-energy-density batteries for e-mobility. This is a PhD position and the department is looking for 2 candidates . The appointment is for four years full-time, with an intermediate assessment after nine months. The role includes teaching duties ranging from a minimum of 10% of the four-year appointment to a maximum of 15% per year. Employment conditions follow the Dutch Universities collective labour agreement, with salary scale P and standard benefits including pension, paid leave provisions, vacation pay, year-end bonus, training support, commuting and home-working allowances, and access to TU/e facilities. Applicants should have a master’s degree or equivalent in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Applied Physics, or Materials Science . Desired expertise includes thin-film deposition methods such as ALD, CVD, and PVD , material characterization, energy materials, and battery technologies. Strong independence, high-quality academic research experience, teamwork, excellent English, and communication skills are important. The project also values candidates who enjoy supervising Bachelor’s and MSc students and working in a dynamic, international, interdisciplinary environment. The application is open until the position is filled, and the posted last application date is 2026-07-29 . To apply, candidates must submit a complete application online through the application link, including a cover letter, CV with publications, and contact information for three references. Email or postal applications will not be processed.
