Fully Funded Industrial PhD in Physics: Magnetic Metamaterials and Millimetre-Wave Devices
University of Exeter is advertising a
fully funded Industrial PhD in Physics
through the Centre for Metamaterials Research & Innovation (CMRI) and the MetaHUB team.
The project is titled
Magnetic Metamaterials and Millimetre-Wave Devices
and sits at the intersection of
physics, materials science, electrical engineering, and computational design
. The research will focus on designing and building miniaturised microwave antennas, composite 3D metamaterials, magnetodielectrically-loaded antennas, and next-generation communication systems with applications in defence, telecoms, and healthcare.
Students will work on experimental and computational research including electromagnetic modelling, micromagnetic modelling, finite-difference time-domain methods, AI-assisted inverse design, micro/nanofabrication, and characterisation of metamaterials. The project is embedded in a collaborative environment with academic, industrial, and governmental partners, including Leonardo UK Ltd.
Funding:
fully funded studentship with tuition fees covered, a training budget, and a tax-free stipend of at least £22,805 per year for 4 years full-time.
Eligibility:
UK Nationals or UK Dual Nationals only. Applicants should have, or be about to obtain by August 2026, a First or Upper Second-Class degree in a relevant Physical Science, Materials Science, or Engineering discipline, and should show computational ability.
Deadline:
21 June 2026 at 23:59 BST. Start date is no later than October 2026.
Successful applicants will join CMRI in the Department of Physics & Astronomy at Exeter and may also spend time at Leonardo UK facilities in the UK. Security vetting may be required, with costs covered by the studentship.
