PhD Position in Engineering Materials: Advanced Sorbent Materials for Environmental and Gas-Cleaning Applications

Luleå University of Technology, a rapidly growing institution with world-leading expertise in several research areas, offers a PhD position in Engineering Materials within the Division of Materials Science. The university is renowned for its close collaboration with international, national, and regional companies, the public sector, and leading universities, fostering a creative and diverse academic environment. The Division of Materials Science is part of the Department of Engineering Science and Mathematics and is engaged in broad research areas including metallic and ceramic materials, high-temperature intermetallics, space materials, high-strength steels, porous ceramics, and materials for energy recovery. This PhD project focuses on the design, synthesis, optimization, and characterization of advanced sorbent materials for environmental and gas-cleaning applications, specifically targeting selective NOx and SOx capture under humid industrial conditions. The research will involve developing functionalized activated carbons, ion-exchanged zeolites, and MOF-based hybrid composites, aiming to improve adsorption selectivity, moisture stability, and low-temperature regeneration capability. The student will investigate adsorption mechanisms, binding thermodynamics, NO and NO2 discrimination, and SO2 cross-interference using advanced characterization and adsorption testing techniques. Durability of sorbents under realistic gas mixtures containing impurities will be studied, with an emphasis on optimizing material formulations for additive manufacturing compatibility and pilot-scale implementation. The project is funded through EIC Pathfinder challenges, focusing on waste to value creation. The position is based in Luleå and offers a time-limited employment of 4 years, with the possibility of teaching and other departmental duties up to 20% of full-time. The research group consists of seven senior researchers, two technicians, and eleven doctoral students, providing a vibrant and supportive environment for academic development. The university actively promotes gender equality and diversity, ensuring a respectful and cooperative workplace. Applicants should hold a Master of Science degree in materials science, chemistry, or chemical engineering, with strong knowledge and experience in sorption and catalysts and their characterization. Proficiency in written and oral English is required, and experience in processing science, porous materials, and synthetic chemistry is advantageous. The application must include a CV, personal letter, and copies of verified diplomas from high school and universities, written in English or Swedish. The closing date for applications is August 9, 2026. For further information, contact Professors Farid Akhtar and Alberto Vomiero. To apply, use the provided application link and mark your application with reference number 3877-2026. Luleå University of Technology values respect, openness, cooperation, trust, and responsibility, making it an excellent place for doctoral studies in materials science.
