The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR)

Epidemiology, Real-world Data, Health Outcomes Research

This fully funded PhD opportunity at the Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) focuses on the late effects of childhood cancer treatments, including chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and immunotherapy. Supervised by Professor Amy Berrington and Dr Aislinn Macklin-Doherty, the project aims to investigate long-term health consequences for survivors, using advanced epidemiological approaches such as causal inference and quantitative bias assessment. The research will leverage national datasets like the NHS Radiotherapy Dataset (RTDS) and Systemic Anti-Cancer Therapy (SACT) dataset, linked with national health records, to analyse treatment trends and evaluate risks of subsequent malignancies. The goal is to generate evidence that informs clinical guidelines and surveillance strategies for paediatric cancer survivors. The ICR is internationally recognised for its contributions to oncology and offers an interdisciplinary training environment in epidemiology, real-world data analysis, and health outcomes research. Applicants should have a strong background in epidemiology, public health, or data science, with quantitative skills and experience in handling large datasets. The position is funded by the NIHR Health Protection Research Unit in Radiation Threats and Hazards, providing a stipend and tuition coverage. Applications are open until 8 September 2025. For further details and to apply, visit the ICR project page.
