Fully funded PhD opportunity at the University of York in the Frei Lab , working in collaboration with the INEOS Oxford Institute for Antimicrobial Research . This interdisciplinary studentship sits within the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Chemical Synthesis for a Healthy Planet (CSHP CDT) and combines machine learning , automated synthesis , robotics , antibiotic discovery , and inorganic chemistry . The project focuses on developing metal-based antibiotics using sustainable high-throughput chemistry, miniaturised synthetic workflows, target-based screening, and data-driven molecular design. The successful PhD student will work across experimental and computational approaches, including automated synthesis of metal complexes, screening against bacterial target proteins involved in cell-wall biosynthesis, machine-learning-guided library design, and testing compounds against whole bacterial cells. The studentship includes dedicated training in modern synthesis, sustainability, data science, and professional development, alongside a wider PhD cohort in the CDT.
