Doctoral Student in Computational Mathematics (Stochastic Manifolds)
Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, Sweden, invites applications for a fully funded PhD position in computational mathematics, focusing on time-evolving stochastic manifolds. The successful candidate will join Professor Annika Lang's research group within the Division of Applied Mathematics and Statistics at the Department of Mathematical Sciences, Sweden's largest mathematics department. The department is renowned for its vibrant international environment, frequent academic exchanges, and a supportive atmosphere that fosters both research excellence and work-life balance.
The research project, funded by the European Research Council (ERC Consolidator Grant), is part of the interdisciplinary StochMan project. It integrates stochastic analysis, geometry, partial differential equations, and computational mathematics, with a particular emphasis on solving stochastic partial differential equations on surfaces using advanced numerical methods such as surface finite element techniques. The department's research spans biomathematics, biostatistics, spatial modeling, Bayesian inference, large-scale computational methods, bioinformatics, data science, machine learning, optimisation, and numerical methods.
As a doctoral student, you will take advanced courses within the Graduate School of Mathematics or Applied Mathematics and Statistics, develop your own scientific concepts, and communicate your research results both verbally and in writing. The position typically includes teaching duties at the undergraduate level or other responsibilities, amounting to 20% of your working hours. You will work closely with Professor Annika Lang (main supervisor) and Dr. Irina Pettersson (head of unit, Applied Mathematics and Statistics).
Eligibility requirements include a Master's degree (120 credits) or a Master's degree (60 credits) in mathematics or applied mathematics, or the expectation to complete such a degree by September 1, 2026. For candidates educated outside Sweden, a 4-year Bachelor's degree is accepted. Strong written and verbal English communication skills are mandatory. Experience in stochastic analysis, numerical analysis, differential geometry, computational methods for stochastic (partial) differential equations, random fields, programming, or mathematical statistics will be considered an asset.
