Postdoctoral Position in Molecular Ecology and LAMP Species Detection at Umeå University

Umeå University is advertising a postdoctoral position in molecular ecology within the Department of Ecology, Environment and Geoscience. The role is part of the project Rapid Detect—Transboundary Action: Fast Species Detection using LAMP , led by Associate Professor Anu Valtonen and carried out in collaboration with the University of Eastern Finland, University of Oulu, and Natural Resources Institute Finland. The project is funded by Interreg Aurora . The research focus is on applying and further developing LAMP (loop-mediated isothermal amplification) for fast species detection in ecology and conservation. The method will be tested on invasive and endangered species in Northern Fennoscandia, with laboratory work involving primer testing, DNA extraction from diverse tissues and substrates, and method development for practical use in field monitoring and conservation contexts. This is a full-time postdoctoral appointment for 2 years and 10 months , with an expected start date of 1 September 2026 (or by agreement). The application deadline is 31 July 2026 . Eligibility requires a completed doctoral degree or equivalent by the appointment decision, preferably within the last three years unless special reasons apply. The doctorate should be in Molecular Biology, Ecology, or a related field . The university is looking for someone with experience in DNA extraction and amplification, independent lab coordination, practical understanding of molecular field monitoring, strong communication skills, creativity in troubleshooting, and excellent English. Experience with field sampling, species monitoring, science communication, Swedish ecological monitoring, or knowledge of invasive/endangered species in Northern Fennoscandia is considered an advantage. To apply, candidates must use Umeå University’s electronic recruitment system and upload a cover letter, CV with publication list, verified doctoral degree documentation, verified higher education certificates, and a copy of the doctoral thesis. References will be requested before interview.
