PhD in Geometric Cohesion in Granular Materials and DEM Simulation

PhD opportunity in geometric cohesion in granular materials at the University of Montpellier (LMGC – Laboratoire de Mécanique et Génie Civil), within the ANR project Exo2GeCo . The project studies how the shape of non-convex particles can generate macroscopic cohesion in dense granular assemblies. The research combines Discrete Element Method (DEM) simulations with experimental validation to understand how particle geometry, force networks, and contact properties control the mechanical response of star-shaped granular materials. This PhD is especially relevant for students interested in mechanical engineering , physics , materials science , and civil engineering , with a strong computational and modeling component. The work includes 3D periodic DEM simulations, analysis of stress/strain and contact networks, and development of numerical tools to study the emergence of effective cohesion and friction angle. Funding: fully funded for 3 years by the French National Research Agency (ANR). Location: Montpellier, France. Start date: flexible in 2026. Eligibility highlights: master’s degree in a relevant field; strong skills in numerical modeling, DEM, Python/C++; interest in computational mechanics; English proficiency required, French is an asset. How to apply: prepare one PDF with CV, motivation letter, transcripts, and two referees’ contact details, then email the application to the contacts provided in the post.
