Postdoc in Stochastic PDEs for Transport Networks
Postdoc in Stochastic PDEs for Transport Networks at Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden.
This is an interdisciplinary postdoctoral position in the PRONTO project at the Department of Mathematical Sciences, working at the intersection of applied mathematics, automatic control, and data science. The project focuses on modeling public transport networks with stochastic partial differential equations and understanding uncertainty in large-scale infrastructure systems.
Research environment.
The Department of Mathematical Sciences is a joint department of Chalmers University of Technology and the University of Gothenburg, and the position is based in Gothenburg. The division involved conducts research in computational mathematics, optimisation, biomathematics, statistics, and data science, with strong links to engineering, natural sciences, and industry. The postdoc will join an active research setting with collaboration across mathematics and automatic control.
Research focus.
PRONTO aims to develop mathematical models for public transport networks using stochastic PDEs, graph/network ideas, stochastic optimization and control, and data-driven methods. The project offers a novel perspective on managing uncertainty in transport and infrastructure systems. The successful candidate is expected to conduct research, develop scientific ideas, write manuscripts, and present results to collaborators and at international conferences.
Eligibility and requirements.
Applicants must hold a doctoral degree in applied mathematics, mathematics, mathematical statistics, or another relevant field, or an equivalent foreign degree, by the employment decision date. Strong written and spoken English is required. The call is particularly suited to candidates with training across stochastic PDEs, graph theory or network science, stochastic optimization and control, applied mathematics, AI/data science/statistics, and geostatistics. Experience in transportation applications will strengthen the application.
Employment and conditions.
The position is a temporary full-time appointment for two years starting at the beginning of January 2027. Physical presence is required throughout the employment. Up to 20% teaching may be included on a voluntary basis, including supervision of Bachelor’s and Master’s students. A valid residence permit must be presented by the start date.
Application information.
Apply in English via the online form and upload PDF files: a CV (max 2 pages), a personal letter (max 2 pages), and your PhD thesis or, if applicable, the papers planned for the thesis. Applications sent by email and incomplete applications will not be considered. The deadline is 2026-09-30. Contact persons listed for questions are Prof. Annika Lang, Prof. Balazs Kulcsar, and Dr Irina Pettersson.
