PhD Studentship in Muscle Metabolism, Nutrition and Exercise Physiology for Adult Survivors of Childhood ALL

The project is titled
Understanding Muscle Metabolism Responses to Feeding in Adult Survivors of Childhood Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia
. It focuses on whether adult survivors of childhood ALL experience
anabolic resistance
—a reduced skeletal muscle response to dietary protein—and whether
inflammation
contributes to this effect.
The successful PhD student will work with adult survivors of childhood ALL and matched healthy participants, measuring
body composition
,
muscle strength and function
,
dietary intake
,
inflammation
, and
muscle amino-acid balance
before and after a protein-containing drink. The project also includes developing and testing targeted
nutrition
and/or
resistance-exercise
strategies to support muscle health.

Eligibility highlights: applicants should hold a degree in Nutrition, Sport and Exercise Sciences, Medicine, Biomedical Sciences, Biosciences, Biology, Physiology, or a related discipline. Both home and international applicants are welcome, with around 70% of studentships for home students and up to 30% for international students. The project may be undertaken full-time or part-time.
