Doctoral fellow in economics (with a focus on development / microeconomics)
The Center for Research in Economic Development (CRED) at the University of Namur is offering a fully funded PhD position in economics, supervised by Professor Catherine Guirkinger. This opportunity is ideal for candidates passionate about development economics, microeconomics, and empirical research. The position is supported by the F.R.S.-FNRS (Belgium), with funding secured for four years (initial two-year contract, renewable), and a monthly fellowship of approximately €2,300.
The research project focuses on the large-scale conversion movement among women to New Christian churches in Sub-Saharan Africa, investigating the hypothesis that such conversions are motivated by economic emancipation within restrictive social structures. The project pays special attention to intra-household dynamics and employs a range of empirical strategies, including lab-in-the-field experimental games and original survey data collection. The PhD student will be actively involved in developing survey instruments, designing experimental protocols, coordinating fieldwork (primarily in southern Benin), conducting data analysis, and contributing to academic publications.
CRED is a vibrant research center specializing in economic development, micro-institutions, collective action, market development, and political economy. The center comprises six permanent academic staff, around ten PhD students, and several postdoctoral researchers, fostering a collaborative and interdisciplinary environment. Much of CRED’s research is based on original data collected in various countries, offering students hands-on experience in international fieldwork and data-driven research.
Applicants must hold a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Economics, with strong training in microeconomic theory and econometrics. French proficiency is required for fieldwork, and excellent English is expected. Candidates should demonstrate a strong interest in development economics and be willing to conduct extended fieldwork abroad. Proficiency in at least one statistical software package (Stata, R, or Python) is essential.
