Funded PhD opportunity in Timber Engineering and structural stability at the University of Ottawa / Carleton University (joint research) in collaboration with the Canadian Wood Council . The project focuses on the stability of timber columns subjected to combined axial load and bending , with the broader goal of improving the design of timber compression members under combined loading. Research activities will include full-scale experimental testing , advanced numerical modelling , and analytical investigations . The expected outcomes may contribute to future editions of the Canadian wood design standard, CSA O86 . The successful PhD student will be co-supervised by Dr. Ghasan Doudak and Christian Viau , and will work in a collaborative environment with industry partners and other graduate students. Ideal applicants should have a master's degree , a strong academic record, proficiency in English , and a demonstrated ability to publish academic papers. Helpful background areas include timber engineering , stability of structural elements , lateral-torsional buckling , finite element modelling , full-scale experimental testing , and mechanics of materials .
