Postdoctoral Position in Engineering and Production of Catalytic Bacterial Amyloids for Plastic Degradation

Postdoctoral position at Aarhus University in the engineering and production of catalytic bacterial amyloids for bacterial biofilm applications and plastic degradation. This 39-month postdoc is based in the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics / iNANO at Aarhus University , Denmark, in Professor Daniel Otzen’s research group. The project is part of the Horizon Europe Pathfinder project CATAMPLAS and sits at the interface of microbiology , protein science , biotechnology , biomaterials , and enzymology . The research focuses on engineered bacterial functional amyloids and bacterial biofilm proteins that can be overexpressed and redesigned into sustainable catalytic materials for plastic degradation . The consortium includes expertise in protein engineering, microbial synthetic biology, structural and biophysical characterization, biomaterials, polymer science, industrial biotechnology, and technology validation. Eligibility highlights: a PhD in microbiology, molecular biology, biochemistry, biotechnology, bioengineering, or a related field; hands-on experience with bacterial genetics, molecular cloning, recombinant protein expression, microbial cultivation, protein purification, and biochemical characterization; strong publication record; excellent English; and the ability to work in an interdisciplinary international team. Experience with bacterial biofilms, functional amyloids, protein biophysics, enzymology, synthetic biology, or microbial cell factories is advantageous. Funding and terms: full-time fixed-term employment under Danish university salary agreements, with salary at basic steps 4–8. Start date is 1 November 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter. The application deadline is 7 September 2026 . How to apply: submit the application in English via Aarhus University’s recruitment system. Include a CV, degree certificate, publication list, future research plan, research activity information, teaching portfolio, and verified teaching experience if applicable.
