3 PhD Opportunities in Power System Protection at The University of Manchester

⚡ The University of Manchester is advertising 3 PhD opportunities in Power System Protection with research focused on modern electricity networks and inverter-based resources. Research themes include source-independent protection for inverter-dominated power networks, protection-compatible fault response design for grid-forming converters, protection of power grids with high renewable penetration, protection-friendly IBR control design, and DC grid modelling and protection. Funding routes include: a fully funded PhD studentship for UK Home students; a School of Engineering competition-funded PhD for Home and International applicants; and a UoM–CSC joint scholarship for Chinese nationals. Eligibility and fit : applicants should align their proposed research with power system protection, renewable-heavy grids, inverter-based resources, grid-forming converters, or DC grid protection. The post also welcomes your own research ideas in these areas. How to apply : a formal application through the University’s online system is required for all three routes. Follow the instructions in the relevant advert and use the correct funding-route subject line when emailing the lecturer for informal enquiries. Deadlines : 30 Nov 2026 for the Home Studentship, 1 Nov 2026 for the Competition-Funded PhD first round, and 11 Jan 2027 for the UoM–CSC Scholarship.
