PhD opportunity at Utrecht University in Contextual (dis)advantage and educational inequality . This PhD project examines how families, schools, neighborhoods, and broader family networks jointly shape educational outcomes and inequality. The research focuses on how contextual sorting patterns are linked, and whether advantages or disadvantages in one domain can offset or amplify those in another. The project will use Dutch register data and advanced quantitative methods , including quasi-experimental designs and simulation methods. The position is based at the Department of Sociology , Utrecht University , within the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences. The successful candidate will conduct literature review, data analysis, reporting, conference presentations, and contribute to departmental activities. Teaching is included at a maximum of 10% of the time. Eligibility highlights: applicants should have (almost) completed a Master’s degree in Sociology, Interdisciplinary Social Science, or a related field; have a strong interest in socio-economic and ethnic inequality; and ideally have experience with large-scale complex datasets. Strong English writing and presentation skills are required, and reading proficiency in Dutch is preferred. Funding and contract: this is a paid PhD employment position for 1 year initially, extendable to 4 years upon positive assessment. Salary ranges from €3,059 to €3,881 gross per month for full-time employment, plus holiday pay, year-end bonus, pension, and other employment benefits. Deadline: 12 August 2026.
