Satellite communications and wireless energy transfer

Uppsala University’s Microwave group is offering a fully funded PhD position as part of the EU POWERSAT project, focusing on antenna arrays for satellite communications (SATCOM) and energy harvesting. The research aims to revolutionize satellite power systems by developing hybrid solar-microwave platforms using rectennas to harvest both solar infrared and microwave spillover energy from satellite antennas. The project covers electromagnetic design for multiple frequency bands (C, X, Ku, K, and THz), building and testing demonstrators, and enabling efficient inter-satellite links. The position is based at the Department of Electrical Engineering, in a vibrant international environment with about 160 staff. The successful candidate will work closely with at least two supervisors, including Associate Professor Dragos Dancila, and will be expected to publish in high-impact journals. The role includes up to 20% teaching or departmental duties. Applicants must have a Master’s degree in Physics or Electrical Engineering, with hands-on experience in antenna theory, electromagnetic simulation tools (HFSS, CST), and experimental antenna measurements. Excellent English skills and strong teamwork abilities are required. The position is fully funded for four years, with salary and benefits according to university standards, and includes travel for research and conferences.
