Postdoctoral Researcher in Burn-Resistant Alloy Development for Space Applications

Jönköping University’s Department of Materials & Manufacturing is seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher to join an innovative project on burn-resistant alloy development for space exploration applications. The research is part of the IRON-X project, funded by the Swedish National Space Agency, and is conducted in close collaboration with the Swedish aerospace industry. The department is known for its multidisciplinary research environment, focusing on the properties and manufacturing processes of metallic components, especially cast components. The main research goal is to develop high-performance metallic materials that are resistant to burning or combustion in high-pressure, high-purity oxygen environments, targeting components for space travel combustion engines. The project involves computational thermodynamics (CALPHAD), high-throughput computational screening for alloy design, experimental alloy production (casting and/or additive manufacturing), and comprehensive testing and characterization of the designed materials. Benchmarking against existing solutions and maintaining industrial relevance are key aspects, with a strong emphasis on environmental, economic, and societal impacts. The position is a two-year, full-time postdoctoral appointment starting June 1, 2026, or as soon as possible thereafter. The role is primarily research-focused (minimum 80%), with some educational responsibilities (maximum 20%), and may include co-supervision of postgraduate students. The successful candidate will work in a collaborative, international environment and benefit from the university’s dynamic and globally connected workplace, located in the city center of Jönköping, Sweden. Applicants must hold a Doctorate degree in physical mechanical metallurgy, materials science and engineering, or a related field, preferably obtained within the last two years. Experience with microstructural and physico-mechanical characterization techniques (such as SEM, TEM, XRD, EDS, EBSD, FIB/SEM, tensile, compression, DSC/TGA), alloy design strategies, and high-throughput screening algorithms is highly valued. The ability to supervise students, publish in reputable journals, and maintain good research practices is required. Hands-on experience in combustion or burn-resistant testing is an advantage. Proficiency in English is expected. The position is fully funded, with individual salary settings and collective agreements. No tuition fees apply. The application deadline is February 28, 2026. To apply, candidates should submit a cover letter (including their vision for contributing to the research environment and IRON-X goals), CV, certified certificates and diplomas, two references, five selected publications, and their doctoral thesis via the Varbi system.
