Postdoctoral Position in Sanskrit Philosophy at the University of Vienna

University Assistant postdoctoral
position in the research area of
Sanskrit Philosophy
at the
Faculty of Philosophy and Education
. The post is embedded in
Prof. Elisa Freschi’s
research team and focuses on the history of philosophy in the Sanskrit cosmopolis.
The team’s current research themes include
Mīmāṃsā
, especially Kumārila Bhaṭṭa’s contributions to epistemology, philosophy of language, and ritual; debates on commands and deontics, especially through Maṇḍana Miśra; Sanskrit philosophy of action and law, especially Medhātithi; and
Viśiṣṭādvaita Vedānta
, especially Veṅkaṭanātha’s philosophy of religion.
This is a
postdoctoral
opening, not a PhD or master’s call. The contract is for
3 years
and is renewable for another
3 years
(up to 6 years total). The salary listed is
EUR 5,014.30 gross
paid 14 times per year, with possible increases based on credited professional experience.
Applicants should have completed doctoral studies in Sanskrit philosophy before the contract starts. The doctorate may be in Philosophy, Religion, or South Asia studies, provided the main focus was Sanskrit philosophy. The post also requires a publication record, research interests aligned with one or more of the listed areas, command of Sanskrit, teaching experience, excellent English (C1), organizational skills, teamwork, and the ability to meet realistic goals on time. German is desirable but not strictly required; another Indian language or Tibetan is also desirable.
Responsibilities include research, teaching in BA/MA philosophy programs, organizing reading groups, workshops and talks, publishing in peer-reviewed venues, applying for third-party funding, supervising students, and taking on administrative tasks. The post is physically located at the
