Postdoctoral Research Associate in Experimental Materials Engineering (Mechanical Testing of Metals, Hydrogen Embrittlement)

University of Oxford is advertising a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Experimental Materials Engineering within Prof. Emilio Martinez-Paneda’s Mechanics of Materials Lab in the Department of Engineering Science (central Oxford). The project focuses on mechanical testing of metals and hydrogen embrittlement , with experimental work spanning fracture and fatigue testing, advanced materials characterisation (including SEM and EBSD), hydrogen charging, permeation, and desorption experiments. There are also opportunities to access synchrotron facilities, making this a strong fit for candidates interested in advanced experimental methods and hydrogen-related structural integrity problems. The role is funded by the ERC Starting Grant ResistHfracture , a 5-year project. The post is initially offered for one year with the possibility of extension. Salary is Grade 7 at £39,424–£47,779 per annum inclusive of Oxford University weighting; candidates close to completing the PhD may be considered for a Grade 6 Research Assistant appointment with adjusted duties and salary. Eligibility: applicants must have obtained or be close to obtaining a PhD in engineering, materials science, physics, chemistry, or a closely related discipline. Experience in at least one of the following is expected: mechanical testing, environmentally assisted fracture testing, temperature-programmed hydrogen desorption, materials characterisation, hydrogen permeation, or coupled deformation-diffusion modelling.
