University College Dublin (UCD) Environmental Policy invites expressions of interest for a fully funded PhD studentship focused on 'Flood Risk Perception and Climate Adaptation.' This opportunity is part of UCD's internationally recognized Environmental Policy group, which is renowned for research excellence and policy impact. The successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary team and work under the supervision of Prof Eoin O’Neill and Dr Finbarr Brereton, both experts in environmental policy and risk management. The research will investigate attitudes to flood-risk management, focusing on the transition from engineering solutions to multifaceted approaches including risk perception, awareness, preparedness, and spatial manifestations. The project involves designing and administering social surveys on risk perception, climate change attitudes, and behavioral responses to natural hazards, with comparative spatial analysis using both new and existing datasets. Applicants must hold a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline such as economics, psychology, urban planning, or a related social science. Required skills include expertise in geospatial analysis (e.g., GIS), spatial data analysis, research experience, and strong communication and organizational abilities. English language proficiency is mandatory. The scholarship provides a tax-free stipend of €25,000 per annum for four years, covers tuition fees for EU and non-EU students, and includes funding for research costs and travel. Scholars will benefit from UCD’s career development and networking opportunities. The position is based at UCD, with possible travel to Chang’an University in Xi’an, China for research collaboration.
