About

Florian Leese is a Professor and Head at the University of Duisburg-Essen in Germany. His research focuses on the application of environmental DNA and RNA metabarcoding for biodiversity assessments in various aquatic ecosystems. Recent publications include studies on the interactions of multiple stressors on aquatic species and the optimization of techniques for monitoring river biodiversity. He also explores population genomics to understand aquatic meta-populations and their dynamics in response to environmental changes.

PhD in eDNA-based biodiversity time series in rivers

Doctoral Researcher in eDNA-based biodiversity time series in rivers A PhD opening is available in the Aquatic Ecosystem Research group led by Florian Leese at the University of Duisburg-Essen (Essen campus, Germany). The project, TrendDNA 2.0 , is funded by the Umweltbundesamt / German Environment Agency and focuses on reconstructing long-term river biodiversity trends using archived samples from the German Environmental Specimen Bank. The research combines environmental DNA (eDNA), biodiversity monitoring, freshwater ecology, and time-series analysis. Two case studies are highlighted: an eDNA-based early-warning system using high-frequency autosampler samples from a River Rhine monitoring station and monthly suspended particulate matter samples; and identifying drivers of biodiversity change by linking eDNA with chemical data, including non-target screening, and Water Framework Directive (WFD) monitoring data. Applicants should hold a Master’s degree in biology, ecology, environmental sciences, bioinformatics, or a related field. The post also asks for hands-on molecular lab experience, R/Python skills, and strong curiosity about time-series analysis. The team is described as collaborative and experienced in eDNA work, with close exchange with the Environment Agency / German Specimen Bank and interaction with partners including Senckenberg Nature Research and the Leibniz Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries. Funding details: TV-L E13, 65% position, for 3 years. Start date is as soon as possible. Deadline: 11 November 2026. Interested candidates should read the official announcement linked in the post and follow the application instructions there.
