NOVA.id.FCT - Associação para a Inovação e Desenvolvimento da FCT is recruiting a PhD Researcher for an international call under internal reference #NOVAID295 . The position is based at the Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering, Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia da Universidade Nova de Lisboa (NOVA FCT), Campus da Caparica, Portugal. The research activity is placed within the CENSE R&D Unit (Centro de Investigação em Ambiente e Sustentabilidade, UID/4085/2025) and focuses on computation applied to environmental sciences and engineering and sustainability . The successful candidate will support CENSE’s research capabilities in data analysis and artificial intelligence, apply machine learning and large language models across thematic research areas, and help build data and knowledge infrastructures such as knowledge graphs, ontologies, and multimodal representations. The role also includes collaboration with the CENSE team and external partners in the design, execution, and dissemination of projects funded by competitive national and international grants. This is an unfixed-term employment contract governed by Portuguese labour legislation. The contract is forecast for 12 months and may not extend beyond the project duration, with a maximum duration of 36 months. The position is full-time and involves exclusive dedication unless the full-time regime option is selected under the applicable law. The anticipated starting date is October 2026 . The monthly gross remuneration is €2,408.11 . If the researcher opts for the full-time regime, remuneration is two thirds of the stated amount. Applicants must hold a PhD in Environmental Science and/or Engineering, Environment and Sustainability, Chemistry, Computer Science, Data Science, Applied Mathematics, or a related field, and the degree must be legally valid and/or recognized in Portugal. The post particularly values experience in data analysis and machine learning applied to scientific data, heterogeneous data processing and integration, Python programming, and AI/ML frameworks such as PyTorch, HuggingFace, and LangChain. Strong teamwork skills and communication in Portuguese and English are required.
